What Are Managers Doing for Sterile Processing Week?

Sterile Processing Week starts Oct. 11th and it’s a time of year that we express our appreciation for what sterile processing departments do for patient safety. We asked Andrea Willis, CRCST, CST, NIS, Sterile Processing Manager at St. Vincent Hospital and Loraine Durigan ST, CRCST, CHL, CIS, CER, AGTS, Central Sterile Manager at Advent Health and IAHCSMM Secretary/Treasurer about what they do for Sterile Processing Week.

Q: First, what is Sterile Processing Week and why does it matter?
Willis: It is a chance to say thank you for all the work that is done every day.
Durigan: Sterile Processing Week is that time to truly showcase your team and department by highlighting all the work your team has done throughout the year. It’s a time to invite your c-suite and leadership to tour your department and give recognition. Yes, we should be giving praise and recognition all year long, but this is the time to place extra emphasis on the department and have it truly stand out for the week!

Q: What do you do year over year that proves to be the most successful?
Willis: We have games that involve learning and some without. Sometimes it good to just have fun and not have an agenda behind it.
Durigan: I have a theme each year and now our sister campuses look forward to what our theme will be this year…. stay tuned!

Q: What activity, event, or appreciation do you do that the techs participate the most in? Why do you think you get the most engagement with it?  
Durigan: Our dept leadership pulls money together to provide lunch on one of the days as an extra thank you.
Willis: SPD Week Games is where we get the most involvement: games like putt putt, wrap races, "Musical Case Carts", and "Know Your Neighbor".

Q: Is there something that the whole facility does to appreciate your staff? Not only during SP week but throughout the year as well?
Willis: The hospital has Hospital Week for everyone. Nothing particular just for SPD.
Durigan: This year has been different with COVID and our leadership has come up with creative ways to recognize every department such as leaving notes of appreciation on our cars, having ice cream delivered by our c-suite team and having lunch provided. They are good at trying to recognize the whole campus.
