Loaned instrumentation is becoming more and more common in healthcare facilities around the globe and with that, the challenges of managing loaned trays from vendors, neighboring facilities, and other departments are more relevant than ever.
Developing a formal policy on the receipt and use of loaner instrumentation is an important first step in overcoming the challenges of managing loaned trays.
A successful loaned instrumentation policy should be established with input from a multi-disciplinary team that includes: Sterile Processing, Operating Room, and other departments such as, Infection Prevention and Control, Materials Management, Administration, and surgeons. The written policy should include standard practices for:
Requesting loaned instrumentation
Time requirements for pre and post-procedure processing
Acquisition of loaned items including detailed inventory lists and images
Obtaining FDA-cleared manufacturers’ instructions for use
Cleaning, decontaminating, and sterilizing processes
Transportation of loaned trays to the point of use
Post-procedure decontamination, processing, and inventory
